Kids sticking with Habitat

Students in St. Lucie County build a better home for family

John Carroll High School students unveiled their mastery of carpentry this week when they started building a house for a family in need. Sophomore and junior class members of the Catholic school spent the last two days framing the interior and exterior walls of a new home destined for ownership by the Louidor family.

Jackets in the community

Members of Georgia Tech's baseball and volleyball teams, as well as a couple of Yellow Jacket cheerleaders, spent all day Saturday working at a local Habitat for Humanity project in south Atlanta. The community service project was the first of the semester for the Yellow Jacket student-athletes, who returned to class just five days earlier, but one they had been looking forward to since the fall. Terry leadership scholars volunteer in the Big Easy

Extract: A week after the Bulldogs' victory over Hawai'i in New Orleans, another group of university students are traveling to the Big Easy. However, their trip will serve a different purpose – community service. Thirty students from the Leonard Leadership Scholars Program in the University's Terry College of Business will spend today through Sunday in New Orleans working with Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps lower-income individuals build homes. The electrical, plumbing and carpentry classes at Franklin County Tech are building a house in Turners Falls. They're working hard for Habitat for Humanity. Switchfoot swaps band instruments for building tools

Extract: Multi-Platinum selling band Switchfoot concluded its 34-city Appetite for Construction Tour with Reliant K and Ruth in Everett, WA Dec. 3.  The benefit tour that hit such major markets as New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas and more, raised about $100,000 for Habitat for Humanity. College gives house to help family
Extract: This boxy old house along a one-way street near Union College will soon be home to a needy family. "It's a unique situation where they've (Union College) given us the property, and will help us get the job done, and hopefully it will lead to a campus chapter," said Jeffrey W. Clark, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County. Clark was referring Wednesday afternoon to the nearly century-old Barrett Street house that the college recently conveyed to the agency. Read the full story in the Times Union.
