The HFH Curriculum has a component for grades 3-5 called the HFH Primary Curriculum, and a component for grades 9-12, the HFH Secondary Curriculum.
The HFH Curriculum focuses on housing issues around the globe, particularly paying attention to issues facing low-income families. It explores the social, economic, geographic and political issues surrounding housing. Questions such as “What makes a home?” and “What are basic human needs?” are also addressed.
The HFH Curriculum provides an interesting and dynamic way to teach about culture, economics, politics and society all while instilling a greater understanding and appreciation for community service within your students. The HFH Curriculum does not teach religious themes and can be used in public schools. Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian organization that does not discriminate on a religious basis for homeowners, volunteers or employees. The HFH Curriculum’s focus is on housing issues, not Habitat’s mission, philosophy or Christian identity, and it contains no sectarian or evangelical language or themes.
No. The HFH Curriculum has been developed for teachers’ use within a classroom setting but can be used in different settings. The HFH Curriculum can be used with church groups, Boy or Girl Scouts or any other youth-serving organization.
HFH Primary Curriculum includes up to six hours of class time. The HFH Secondary Curriculum includes lessons for up to ten hours of class time. Nevertheless, the lessons in both components of the HFH Curriculum can be used stand-alone, giving teachers an opportunity to use as little as an hour of class time. Extension activities are suggested to lengthen lessons, though they require additional teacher preparation.
Each unit is different, but most require less than a half an hour of prep time. The HFH Curriculum includes a teacher’s guide, lesson plans, worksheets, reading handouts, assessments, rubrics and answer keys.
