Habitat for Humanity participates in German Churches Day
COLOGNE (June 1, 2007) – Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Germany joins civic organizations and church groups at the German Churches Day in Cologne, a free movement of persons brought together by Christian faith. Habitat has a stand at the Market of Opportunities (Markt der Moeglichkeiten), an exhibition area for associations and church organizations to display their work.
”With this special exhibition area, Habitat for Humanity Germany will have a wonderful opportunity to illustrate to the visitors the work we do in Europe and around the world to lift people out of poverty through building and restoring homes”, says Jennifer Lemke, executive director of HFH Germany.
One hundred thousand people from Germany and all over the world are expected to attend German Churches Day 2007 (Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag). From June 6 to June 10, the Kirchentag opens as a place of dialogue and encounter, inviting people with different persuasions, interests and cultural background to commit to the future of the church and the world.
HFH Germany seeks to show its work to German churches and public and to create partnerships with other Christian organizations. HFH Germany also hopes to promote the Global Village Program among youth and churches, inviting the public to take part in this unique volunteer initiative to combat poverty housing around the globe. In Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village trips, team members work alongside members of the host community, raising awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent, affordable housing worldwide.
HFH Germany, which is based in Cologne, focuses on fundraising and recruiting volunteers to support Habitat programs all over the world. This year, HFH Germany is sending 16 teams of volunteers to build houses in 40 countries through Habitat’s Global Village Program. HFH Germany has partnerships with organizations such as YouthCompass, Citibank and Bauknecht/Whirlpool and is a member of the UN Global Compact Network in Germany.
The Habitat for Humanity stand is open June 7th to 9th from 10 am to 7 pm, located in the area “humanity”, sub area “poverty and homelessness”.
