Simple Pleasures Will Make Habitat House Into a 'Home'

Gabriela Sanchez Nieto has helped with every stage of construction of her new home.

Gabriela Sanchez Nieto says that the sacrifices to pay for her family's new Habitat house in Puebla will be worth it—simply because they won't have to move their furniture every time it rains.

"We have holes in our roof," Gabriela explains. She is tired of worrying about having a dry place for her 7-year-old daughter to sleep.

A friend of Gabriela's husband told them about the Jimmy Carter Work Project, and for the past year, the family has been working toward this week and the building of their house. "We helped clear the land, excavated it. I've liked it all," Gabriela shares.

Gabriela says she had never heard of an organization like Habitat. "It is difficult to build a house at a reasonable cost in Mexico," she explains. Habitat for Humanity is making that possible for her family.

Gabriela's plans for after she moves into her house?

"I want to paint it," she says. "Light pistachio."
