Homeowner Stories
Single father builds new home for himself, son By Leigh Powell Jermarale “Jay” McGhee works as a technician for General Dynamics, but this week his work consists of roofing, caulking and installing windows. The homeowner of House #2, Jay has limited construction experience from a summer job, but he’s never done a build from the ground up. New Hope Construction is sponsoring Jay’s house, and many of the volunteers on his crew are builders by profession. He says he’s learning new stuff every day. “They’re doing everything really nice, and they’re working with me,” he says with a laugh. “They know I don’t really know anything.” Jay is looking forward to having a new home for himself and his son, Jaquaveon, who will be 1 in July. Working with so many people from different places and backgrounds has been a new experience for Jay. “Everyone is so nice, and everyone is getting along and working…,” he says. He’s also been impressed with everyone’s concern for each other’s safety. “Habitat is doing a good thing, a very good thing,” Jay concludes. “This is a blessing.”
