Frequently asked questions — International Volunteer Program


Who can apply to be an international volunteer?

  • Those 18 and older are welcome to apply.
  • People with a variety of skills and from all around the world are welcome. Since the volunteers in this program serve on specific, often office-based assignments, they must possess the skills for the project.
  • Those who are able to be flexible and sensitive to multi-cultural environments and willing to adapt to new ways of doing things.


Why should I volunteer?

  • Serving abroad in this capacity exposes you to a broader understanding of global issues, other ways of life and an unforgettable experience.
  • You will be able to share your professional expertise from a new perspective and apply your skills in a new context.
  • You will witness poverty and housing needs and you will see firsthand Habitat for Humanity’s impact.
  • You will achieve great satisfaction in being part of the solution to the global poverty housing crisis.


Where can I volunteer?

  • Locations vary based on the Habitat office requesting a long-term international volunteer.
  • Past locations have included Argentina, Armenia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Egypt, Ghana, Haiti, Hungary, Ireland, Kenya, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Tanzania and Zambia.


What types of assignments do you have?

  • Typical assignments include work in administration, communications, finance, programs, resource development or volunteer coordination.
  • Occasionally we need to fill specialized construction assignments such as site assistants and foremen.

How long are the volunteer assignments?

Assignment lengths vary; however, the average term of service is six to twelve months.

How much does it cost to participate?

  • An estimate of the cost for each volunteer assignment is included in the description posted online.
  • In some cases, the host country provides assistance with local transportation, housing or some other kind of support.
  • In all cases, you are responsible for all costs associated with living abroad. These costs include international medical insurance, housing, food and travel to and from the host country.
  • We do not charge an administrative fee for the program.

  • Once you find a match for your talents and interests, download the application and waiver of liability.
  • Be sure to submit copies of a current passport, resume and specific assignment for which you are applying with your application.
