PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING!
What is Habitat for Humanity International?
Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide.
If you would like to learn more about HFHI before applying, consider exploring the Foundations of HFHI online courses.
What Habitat for Humanity International is NOT
Although representatives of HFHI are proud to exemplify and communicate its Christian foundations and values, they are not involved in proselytizing (religious conversion). Political involvement is also unacceptable while representing Habitat for Humanity International.
What will Habitat provide for me?
When you participate in the International Volunteer Program, you can expect the following to be provided for you:
• Pre-arrival travel information and advice
• Documentation for obtaining visa or work permit (if required)
• Assistance from the host office in finding simple, decent housing
• Logistical support upon arrival
• In-country orientation
• Supervision and cross-cultural support
• An experience that will be both rewarding and unforgettable
What about health insurance?
All International Volunteer Program participants are required to purchase and provide proof of international travel and health insurance, as required by HFHI’s international board of directors. Habitat requires you to purchase Medex international medical evacuation insurance. Learn more about MEDEX.
Do I need a passport?
Volunteers must have a valid passport to travel internationally. The passport must also be valid until at least six months past the return date. Passport applications are usually available at your local postal service or from a county clerk's office. There is often a passport processing fee, and you should allow sufficient time for processing.
Do I need a visa?
Visa requirements and fees will vary from country to country. The best way to find out what is appropriate for your situation is to contact the closest consulate of the country to which you will be traveling. Be sure to clarify all information with the consulate and your Habitat host office regarding what type of visa you will need (tourist/business, single or multiple entry), length of stay and visa extensions, if necessary.
How much does the program cost?
The international volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with living abroad, including, but not limited to visas, international medical insurance, housing, utilities, food and travel to and from host country. The cost of participation will vary from country to country, depending also on the length of service. An estimate of the cost for each volunteer position is included in the individual assignment description.
What should I know about refunds or cancellations?
Habitat for Humanity International will not be able to refund any money that the international volunteer has invested in the International Volunteer Program due to cancellation on either the part of HFHI or the international volunteer.
