In the dark, early hours of a July morning, young Safargul Sodikova and her extended family were roused from sleep by the rumbling twin earthquakes that struck the southern section of the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan. Most of the homes in Safargul's home village of Zamini Nav, a farming community located within an hour of the northern Afghan border, were destroyed. Since the quake, the village's nearly 900 residents--including the Sodikova family--live in government-provided tents. Habitat for Humanity Tajikistan is partnering with international aid organizations Oxfam and Global Partners to help families like Safargul's construct more seismically stable homes--and to start anew with strength.
