Twenty-seven years ago...

Habitat for Humanity stepped into the overwhelming problem of Guatemalan poverty and took a stand--a stand against the hopelessness of grinding poverty, generation after generation. It was a stand against raising children in dirty, soggy, disease-prone conditions. It was a stand against substandard housing.

It's working.

As of 2005, Habitat for Humanity had built more than 20,000 houses with families across Guatemala, lifting 2 percent of the country's poor families out of conditions more appropriate for livestock than for humans. By 2007, Habitat Guatemala anticipates that its building capacity will reach 5,000 houses a year.

The chance to own a simple, block Habitat house--not much by U.S. standards, but dry and sturdy - is a dream come true. Parents are willing to work hundreds of hours to build a house with a concrete floor that will dramatically increase the respiratory health of their children, to build a house with dry walls that keeps their food safe from insects and mold.

Nearly 11 million Guatemalans - and more than a billion people worldwide--need your help. Your donation helps Habitat offer a hand up out of poverty to security, better health and peace of mind.

Take a stand with us, and use the envelope inside to further our work. You can also call (800) HABITAT to give, or visit us online at www.habitat.org, where you can donate securely.

Thank you for caring.
