You Can Help

Long before a Habitat house is built in the United States, there has to be land on which to build. Finding it can be challenging. That's why one of the most vital volunteer committees to be involved in is that of the site selection committee.

This committee works with the local affiliate's board of directors to define focus areas or neighborhoods and works to acquire building sites within them. Sometimes, focus areas are best tackled by renovating or rehabilitating existing structures. In other instances, land donations present opportunities for new construction. Focus area research helps affiliates determine if they should concentrate on large property development or scattered site development.

Acceptance of a donated piece of land, or acquisition of a property takes place when the following conditions are met:
  • The property can accommodate the affiliate's basic house design;
  • Clear title is obtained;
  • Site is properly zoned;
  • Use restrictions have been explored;
  • Site meets other use ordinances, or a use variance has been obtained;
  • Land issues such as toxic waste, flood plain and drainage issues, incompatible soil, setback requirements and wetlands, or other natural habitat restrictions have been addressed.

    If you are interested in getting involved with site selection, see our searchable local affiliate directory and contact the affiliate office nearest you.
