Every year since Habitat's first Jimmy Carter Work Project in 1984, the excitement generated by the Carters' involvement in this annual blitz build raises awareness of Habitat's work. Happy homeowners are the results of the 1988 JCWP in Atlanta (left). The JCWP brings the joy of building in partnership to a different city each year. Charlotte, North Carolina's "Miracle on 19th Street" was the fourth JCWP, held in 1987. Hundreds of volunteers sang as they marched in the Walk from Portland, Maine, to Atlanta, Ga., and built 120 houses along the way HFHI headquarters moves again. Largely constructed by volunteers, the building was designed for office use with the capability of being converted to volunteer housing later. New programs are developed to meet special needs and invite new partners into Habitat's work. These partners help build Habitat's dream of No More Shacks! 1984 -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn become Habitat partners. 1984 -- The first Jimmy Carter Work Project is held in New York City. 1985 -- The second annual JCWP takes place, again in New York City. 1986 -- HFHI celebrates its tenth anniversary with the Walk from Americus to Kansas City (1,000 miles). 1986 -- Millard Fuller's third book, No More Shacks!, is published. 1986 -- The first Habitat affiliate in Canada is approved. 1987 -- HFHI headquarters moves to 121 Habitat Street in Americus. 1987 -- HFHI's Campus Chapters program begins. The first chapter is at Baylor University, Waco, Texas. 1987 -- The Appropriate Technology department and Covenant Church program are started. 1987 -- Habitat is formed in Australia. 1988 -- The JCWP spans two cities -- Philadelphia and Atlanta. 1988 -- HFHI's Global Village program and Corporate Donor department are established. 1989 -- Hurricane Hugo strikes South Carolina -- all Habitat houses in the state survive.
