Shelter Report 2008: Building a secure future through effective land policies.
This 76-page booklet outlines what happens to families around the world because they lack title to their home or land. Squatter settlements around growing mega-cities in the developing world add to the problem. The report details the complexity of the issue and sketches what some national offices are doing to help from legal literacy seminars for families to coalition-building.
Through its role developing housing with families around the world, Habitat has experienced first-hand the importance of tenure security and the cost of its absence. Although this is not as a comprehensive resource on this issue it heightens awareness of the unfair housing practices in developing countries and presents the case for raising the priority of improved tenure security as a way to alleviate poverty.
