Haiti earthquake
On Jan. 12, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti just 10 miles west of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The earthquake damaged nearly 190,000 houses, of which 105,000 were completely destroyed. Of the more than two million affected survivors, more than 500,000 are still displaced today.
Habitat is committed to helping 50,000 earthquake-affected families move toward safe, secure and permanent places to call home.
In two years, Habitat has served more than 40,000 families.

Central United States tornadoes and flooding
In April and May, 2011, violent storms and tornadoes swept across the south and Midwest. A devastating tornado hit Joplin, Mo. Heavy rains caused record flooding along the Mississippi River.
Hundreds of people were killed, neighborhoods were flooded and entire communities were destroyed. Thousands were left homeless.
Local Habitat affiliates are leading the cleanup and rebuilding efforts with significant support from Habitat for Humanity International.

Southern Philippines flash floods and landslides
On Dec. 16, 2011, tropical Storm Washi caused landslides and devastating flash floods in the southern Philippines.
An estimated 7,000 houses were swept away, destroyed or damaged. More than 1,000 citizens were killed. About 143,000 people were affected, including the nearly 50,000 who fled to evacuation centers. The hardest-hit areas have no electricity or clean drinking water.
Habitat for Humanity is assessing the housing need in the impacted area and is pursuing the full range of funding and partnerships.

Indonesia disasters
On October 25, 2010, an earthquake and tsunami struck the Mentawai Islands near Sumatra. At least 320 people are reported to have been killed. An estimated 20,000 people have been displaced.
Additionally, on October 26, 2010, the eruption of Mount Merapi on the island of Java has resulted in the evacuation of an estimated 36,000 people. Early reports from Habitat for Humanity Indonesia indicate nearly 130 Habitat home partner families are among those directly affected.

U.S. Gulf Coast hurricanes (Katrina and Rita)
In August 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast, displacing more than a million residents and inflicting major damage to nearly 550,000 homes.
Today, Habitat’s Gulf Coast affiliates continue to build houses in the affected area as part of the ongoing Gulf Recovery Effort.

Chile earthquake
In the early morning hours of Feb. 27, 2010, a devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Chile, 200 miles southwest of Santiago. Approximately 500,000 homes sustained considerable damage, and 2 million people were affected.
Habitat is helping low-income families by building new homes and repairing existing homes.
