What a difference a day makes! -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1
June 5, 2006What a difference a day makes!
It was a beautiful, sunny Wisconsin day when I arrived at the build site at 6 a.m. this morning. The air was still and unusually warm for early June in Wisconsin. A few ambitious trades were already on the site. Before me sat the two foundations of the homes that we would soon start to build. After attending the opening ceremony at 6:30 a.m., I returned to a job site suddenly awake and bustling with activity. The floor was quickly built on top of the foundation and, before I knew it, first floor walls were being raised. The second floor quickly followed and trusses were being placed by 11:30. By this time our hardworking trades were beginning to feel the wrath of the hot, direct noon sun — especially those on the roof. I can’t even count how many gallons of water and Gatorade were consumed. Despite the heat, everyone blazed forward working together with amazing teamwork. Inspections passed with a sigh of relief and shingles and siding were making rapid progress. When I left the site tonight, I could not believe that just 12 hours ago I stood in the same place staring at two blank foundations, and now I was looking at two two-story homes!
