1996-Zaire
Millard and Linda Fuller return to Zaire to celebrate Habitat for Humanity's 20th anniversary. More than 2,000 houses have been constructed in the country by the end of the year.

1996-Ghana
Delta Sigma Theta sponsors 30 Habitat houses in Ghana, sending a delegation to celebrate with homeowner families as the houses are dedicated.

1996-Burundi
A military coup in Burundi restores Tutsi officer Pierre Buyoya to the presidency. He promises to institute democratic reforms.

1996-Central African Republic
Military riots and an attempted coup prompt French troops to come to the support of President Patesse. The political unrest forces expatriates, including three HFH international partners, out of the country.

1997-Ghana
Habitat for Humanity Ghana celebrates the construction of its 1,000th house in a special ceremony with Habitat president and founder Millard Fuller. Fuller presents a plaque from HFH of Greater Canton, Ohio, a U.S. affiliate that has sponsored 10 percent of the houses constructed in Ghana.

1997-Zaire
Laurent Kabila mobilizes a successful revolution against Mobutu and changes the name of the country to Democratic Republic of Congo.

1998-Nigeria
Gen. Sani Abacha of Nigeria dies, leaving the country in political transition. After being released from prison, Moshood Abiola dies of a heart attack.

1998-Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire)
Insurgents challenge Laurent Kabila; neighboring countries intervene.

1998-Burundi
In partnership with World Vision International, Habitat for Humanity begins construction of 600 houses in the Karuzi area.
