In Sub-Saharan Africa, Habitat for Humanity has collaborated on an extensive research initiative led by FinMark Trust. This research captures the limits and opportunities of formal and informal housing finance markets and has served as a foundation for pilot efforts in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. As a result, Habitat is bringing incremental housing finance solutions to market, with an emphasis on savings-led approaches.
In Ghana, HFH technical advisors have advised local members of the Opportunity International Network in market research and product design for new housing microfinance products and construction technical assistance funded by USAID.
HFH Uganda is a virtual housing microfinance laboratory, offering financial and non-financial services around shelter finance, construction technical assistance and financial education. For more information on how HFHI is collaborating to accelerate, see “Access to Housing Finance in Uganda.”
